2025 Australian Jackaroos Squads Revealed: Fresh lawn bowls talent set for Glasgow 2026

Bowls Australia has unveiled the 2025 Right at Home Australian Jackaroos squads, marking an exciting step toward the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games lawn bowls campaign. The National Selection Panel, including selectors like Therese Hastings and Dave Stockham, along with National Coach Gary Willis and others, have revamped the main and emerging squads, introducing new talent while acknowledging the retirement of key players.

New faces in the Open Men’s Squad

The open men’s lawn bowls squad has undergone notable changes, including the addition of Queensland’s Kane Nelson. Nelson has been a standout performer, recently leading one of the Queensland rinks at the Australian Sides Championships and clinching gold in the men’s triples and fours at the Australian Championships. His impressive track record earned him a spot in place of the retired Aron Sherriff. A familiar face has also returned to the open squad: Lee Schraner. Schraner, who briefly retired from international bowls after earning one cap in 2010, is back after a series of remarkable performances, including a World Champion of Champions title. He replaces Matt Lucas, who is transitioning into coaching, focusing on helping clubs reach their goals.

Acknowledging Matt Lucas’ contribution

Matt Lucas, a significant contributor to the Jackaroos, earned 41 caps since 2022 and played a crucial role in the UK tour before the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. Bowls Australia extended their gratitude to Lucas for his commitment and achievements as he moves into his new coaching career.

Emerging squad sees fresh talent

Victoria’s Olivia Cartwright is one of the latest additions to the emerging bowls squad, following her first national title in the women’s fours at the 2023 Australian Open. Cartwright will represent Australia for the first time at November’s Oceania Challenge, an exciting milestone in her career. New South Wales is also well represented, with Samantha Ferguson and Erin Swatridge joining the Emerging team. Both have a history of notable performances, including multiple national titles and medals, establishing themselves as rising stars in Australian bowls.

Jack McShane and Joseph Clarke Rise to the occasion

New South Wales’ Jack McShane and his teammate Joseph Clarke have also earned spots in the Emerging squad. McShane’s outstanding year included multiple podium finishes at the Australian Open and Nationals, while Clarke’s achievements in pairs and fours titles solidified his place in the squad. Other Emerging squad members include Queensland’s Jacob Nelson and Dale McWhinney-Shillington, along with Victoria’s Tyson Cromie, who each brought home gold in various national competitions. Their inclusion highlights the strength and potential of Australia’s up-and-coming bowlers.

State-based Jackaroos Academies: A new pathway

One of the most significant changes to the high-performance program is the introduction of the State-Based Jackaroos Academies. Replacing the previous Pathways squad, these academies aim to foster young talent across Australia. Managed by BA Performance Pathways Coaches in partnership with state associations, the academies will guide rising stars on their journey from juniors to state representatives, ultimately preparing them for international competition. The academies emphasise building a connected team culture and providing education on high performance, both on and off the green. This initiative represents a crucial step in nurturing Australia’s bowling talent for future success.

Para Squad and emerging Para Jackaroos

The 2025 squads also bring changes to the Para categories. New South Wales’ Carolyn Nelson joins the Para squad after her victory in the B5/6 singles at the 2024 Para Nationals. In the Emerging Para category, Victoria’s Annette Ruffle makes her debut after a series of strong performances, highlighting her ongoing development since winning the Clover Lester Encouragement Award at the 2023 Para Nationals.

A bright future for Australian Bowls

National Coach Gary Willis expressed his excitement about the new squads, emphasising the depth of talent within the country.

“We are thrilled with the 2025 Right at Home Australian Jackaroos squad,” said Willis. “The selectors have worked tirelessly to ensure both short- and long-term success, collaborating closely with state pathways coaches and associations.”

Willis highlighted the crucial role of the new State-Based Academies in shaping Australia’s future bowling champions.

“I look forward to watching the academies evolve, working hand-in-hand with state associations and selectors nationwide.”

The announcement marks the beginning of a new era for Australian lawn bowls, with a clear focus on building a strong, connected team environment as they prepare for the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. The upcoming year promises to be an exciting one as the Jackaroos aim for international success, driven by both experienced veterans and emerging stars. The journey to Glasgow has begun, and Australia’s bowls community is ready to cheer the Jackaroos every step of the way.
